- University of Iowa Libraries provides access to Nature Weekly online
A few months ago we outlined our reasons for refusing to subscribe to Nature Weekly under the conditions and terms the publisher was offering. We are happy to say that through negotiation with the CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation) and the efforts of many other libraries, the publishers of Nature have altered most of the unacceptable terms. The University of Iowa Libraries has initiated a subscription, effective immediately, through a consortial arrangement with many of the libraries of the CIC. This arrangement includes as well the other Iowa Regent universities.Specifically, Nature has eliminated the 12-issue delay for selected sections of Nature and significantly improved the pricing. By joining with CIC and the Iowa Regent libraries, the UI Libraries were able to save over 60% of the earlier list price.
The license still does not provide permanent access to the licensed content of the journal in electronic form. Other journal publishers with whom the Libraries has license agreements allow permanent ownership and persistent archival rights to the content in digital form. This remains a serious concern, but we felt that the advantages of campuswide access to Nature Weekly outweighed this disadvantage.
You can access Nature at http://proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/login?url=http://www.nature.com/nature/ or from Hardin’s electronic journals page at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/ej.

Iowa Drug Information Service (IDIS) indexes pharmacy and medical English language journal articles (since 1966) and provides full-text access to articles published since 1997. U.S. Drug Approval Packages (Summary Basis of Approval) are also available in the database. Content areas include drug therapy in humans and clinical pharmaceutics. Indexes for each article identify the drugs and diseases in the journal article and also the study design; descriptors indicate if the article contains information on pharmaceutics, dosage, administration, drug/laboratory test/food interactions, side effects and incompatibilities, toxicity, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics or if the article is approved for pharmacy continuing education. Drug, disease and descriptor terms are cross-referenced to their synonyms and common names in a thesaurus. The database is updated monthly.
